Be a Part of History
The history of the Northwest Open is a major part of the historical past of golf in the Pacific Northwest. The early years have been dominated by the Section’s first president, Robert Johnstone (who won 6 of the primary 10 events), and “Long Jim” Barnes. Barnes, the skilled at Tacoma C&GC from 1911 – 1915, received the first two PGA Championships (1916, 1919) along with the 1921 U.S. Open and the 1925 British Open! Marvin “Bud” Ward captured six championships over a 22 year span, 5 as an novice and his final as a professional. Bud was also a National Amateur champion and may have received a few more but for the dearth of championships during WWII. The 54-hole tournament report of 199 was set by PGA Professional Derek Barron in 2015 at Wine Valley GC and tied in 2016 by PGA Professional Brian Thornton.
